Pin this post of how to sew a stuffed creature – tips for sewing softies using this link or collage image:
General tips
1.Prewash– If you're making the stuffed creature for a child, it'south smart to make sure it can exist washed without incident! Prewash all your fabrics however y'all think they'll be washed in finished grade. For me, that usually ways washed on common cold and line dried.
2. Check for holes/gaps on both sides before turning correct side out– Most stuffed animals have you sewing front to dorsum, correct sides together, earlier turning right side out through a gap. Accept a 2d to look along your seam on both sides, making sure the fabric didn't slip anywhere, leaving you with a hole when y'all plough it right side out! While you lot can surely turn it wrong side out once again and fix it, that volition misconstrue the opening and skew the finished lines. Every bit you can run across, everything looks cool on the left but psych! When you flip it over, no dice.
3. Fe everything– Atomic number 26 your fabric before yous cut yous pattern pieces, press your seams, and iron your finished stuffed animal before y'all add the stuffing! It makes everything look crisper.
4. Don't pull as well rough through gap opening– When y'all're turning right side out, go slow and exist gentle! It'southward easy to distort the opening if you yank also rapidly.
5. Clip curves & corners– This is an important i – be sure to cut pocket-size triangles out of curves that curve out and cut small slits in curves that curve in, this helps the fabric to lie flat and look pretty. Yous can see an illustration above showing the deviation, neither was pressed.
six. Fe seam allowance dorsum earlier turning correct side out– This is a fussy 1 merely I find it makes sewing the opening shut much easier! Simply iron the seam allowance back on both sides before you plough it right side out.
7. Pay attending to fabric type– Most patterns are written for either woven fabric, knit fabric, or felt and switching in between those will change the finished product'southward appearance. You tin can see my kitty lump pattern sewn equally described, with woven cotton, in the centre and then knit textile with the stretch going one mode on the left and the opposite fashion on the right. Y'all tin add interfacing to knit textile and care for information technology similar a woven, but it just takes a petty actress work.
If y'all're using applique for faces or details, I have a whole divide post talking about motorcar applique here!
8. Top-stitching seamlessly– If you're not a perfectionist, taking a few stitches back and forth and the beginning and end of a seam is a no brainer (correct, in a higher place). If you desire it to wait picture perfect, leave the tails long and pull them through to the dorsum and hand tie a knot to secure instead (left, higher up).
9. Ladder stitch to close– My favorite style to shut softies, the ladder stitch looks seamless once y'all pull it shut! Simply take tiny stitches along your seam allowance back and along, and pull to close.
10. Learning grainline– Pay attention to the grainline pointer on your pattern pieces and learn what grainline is on your fabric! This keeps the body pieces from pulling funny at each other. Equally tempting as information technology is to tile pattern pieces in equally tight as possible, pay attention to grain instead.
